WHAT IS EDGE PROTECTION?
Edge Protection is a means of collectively protecting workers against falling from height and is a solution usually made up of barriers held in place by posts which are in turn held in place by brackets, clamps, or bases.
At What Height is
Edge Protection Required?
The minimum height for edge protection is 1000mm. If workers are working above the 1000mm minimum height, are close to the leading edge and where the edge protection is installed, then the edge protection should be made high enough so that there is no chance the worker can fall over it.
Where should Edge
Protection be installed?
Edge protection should be installed (according to EN13374) where there is a risk of a fall from height high enough to cause injury or worse.
Typical places edge protection is installed for construction:
-
The perimeter of levels on multi-storey buildings.
-
Any service or lift voids.
-
Stairwells.
-
Around stair flights and landings.
-
Anywhere where there is a risk of a fall from height.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT VARIATIONS
OF EDGE PROTECTION?
Barrier Edge Protection Systems
Made up of steel barrier fencing and steel posts which are in turn fixed to the building structure or platform by brackets, clamps, or bases. These are used to protect people working on areas where there is a risk of falling from height such as a leading edge on a construction site or civil engineering project such as a bridge refurbishment.

Catchfan Systems
A double layered net which rests at angles on the side of the building structure to catch or absorb the force of any object which may fall. The Catchfan minimises any damage caused to the building structure and protects members of the public below. Catchfans are an additional safety measure to edge protection, Catchfans should not be installed without edge protection being installed as well.

Fall Arrest Systems
A system which utilises an anchor point, an inertia reel block and a body harness to protect a single worker. This system aims to reduce the impact experience by the worker should they fall.
